The LIS experience

We know there’s more to life than studying and that a lot of what you’ll get out of your time at LIS will happen outside the classroom.

As an LIS student, you’ll be part of the fast-paced, intensive, and fun journey of building a new university. That means you’ll have a unique opportunity to play a key role in establishing processes, clubs, societies, and traditions that future students will enjoy for years to come.

Marielle van der Meer - LIS

“The most exciting part of the LIS student experience is that our students will shape it for themselves. They’ll create their own clubs and societies, build their own community and have their voices heard at every step.”

Marielle Van der Meer, Director of Student Experience at LIS

Shape your student experience

Student representation

Student reps are included on every major decision-making committee of LIS, including the Board of Directors, Academic Council, and the Student Voice Committee. Student reps gather feedback from the wider student body on all aspects of LIS — from teaching and learning to wellbeing, careers and extracurricular programmes, and how to manage our facilities and resources — and work with faculty and staff to help LIS deliver an excellent student experience.

LIS Lates

Co-curated with students, this career- focused events series brings inspiring leaders and professionals to campus for Q&As, panels, and fireside chats, offering our students the opportunity to learn about different industries and sectors and build their network.

Co-curricular activities

Our student experience team work closely with faculty to plan activities linked to the problems students are studying each term. The activities range from documentary film nights with directors, to urban exploration sessions, extending and enhancing what is being covered in class.

You decide

We encourage LIS students to be hungry for knowledge and to demonstrate an independence of mind, and that doesn’t stop in the lecture hall. This is your chance to create something different that can have a lasting impact.

Social & extracurricular

Student union

We’ve partnered with Queen Mary’s Student Union, a short walk from the LIS campus. This means you’ll be able to access their sports and gym facilities, play in their recreational sports leagues, and join some of their clubs and societies. Of course, you’ll also have access to their student bars and some jointly organised club nights.

Social events

Some events simply exist to create community, stimulate creativity, or clear your mind. Writing evenings, yoga evenings, Monday morning mindfulness sessions, and TGIF celebrations are some of the ways our student body come together to just relax and have fun.

Sports clubs and societies

LIS provides students with the resources they need to create their own sports teams, clubs, and societies, which are then governed by the student-run Student Association. So far, our students have created sports teams like boxing, climbing, and 5-a-side football, and societies like the exploring cultures society, impact investment society, and music society. We also help you find opportunities with local sports clubs so you can play competitive sports like tennis, hockey, and football.

COVID-19

The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic may impact our academic schedule starting in autumn 2021.

Given this possibility, we are investing in developing contingency strategies to deliver the course, and broader student proposition, remotely. We are confident that, should teaching have to move online, we are well-equipped to deliver an excellent learning experience.

Campus

Our students will join us in Whitechapel (just off Brick Lane) in the heart of the city. Shoreditch will be right on your doorstep, with all the art, fashion, bars and restaurants that it has to offer. And, of course, there’s the City of London itself. One of the world’s most famous business districts, housing billion-pound organisations, purpose-driven start-ups, and everything in between. Visit our campus page to learn more.

Student accommodation

We know that where students live will play a key role in their wellbeing. Feeling safe, secure and comfortable at home will enable you to arrive on campus ready to learn and make the most of your educational experience.

Whether you chose to live in student accommodation organised through external providers, private housing or commute from home, we will work hard to build a strong sense of community and belonging for all students.
